TALKING SHOP | DAMAGE

Damage was founded in 2005 by Ben Olson and it has grown into one of the best specialty retailers in the Midwest. In fact, they were awarded Midwest Retailer of the Year by Transworld in 2012. So you know they’re doing something right. We asked Ben a few simple questions and he gave us a few simple answers.

Q: When was the shop founded and why?
A: 2005 because we wanted to live the dream.

Q: Of all the brands out there, what made you decide to carry ELM?
A: Elm is a brand that was not over distributed and we wanted something fresh, new, and different to offer our customers.

Q: What styles of headwear resonate best with your customers?
A: Caps in the summer, Beanies in the winter.

Q: Do you have any local events coming up that the shop is involved with?
A: We have a constant flow of skate and snow events depending on the time of season here in MN.

Q: Who is the rest of your staff?
A: Our employees live in a world of secrecy. Just try and find them!

So if you’re ever around Duluth, Minnesota, be sure to stop by and give them some business.

On Saturday, the city of Annapolis, Maryland will host a volunteer workday to make repairs to the ramps, boxes, rails and hardware that constitute the Truxton Skate Park. The Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department will provide all of the construction materials, but need interested volunteers to tighten bolts, hammer nails, carry lumber, and renovate our park to its original condition.
Pure Board Shop and ELM will be having free raffles for skate products and gear and will host a BBQ lunch to thank the volunteers for helping rejuvenate the skate park.
If you want to volunteer, please show up at 200 Truxton Park Road, in Annapolis, at 9 a.m. Please wear sturdy shoes, no open-toe shoes or flip-flops and bring work gloves and eye protection if available.

LEWIS MARNELL TRIBUTE

Singer-guitarist Ben Harper is helping to raise money for the family of Australian pro skateboarder Lewis Marnell, whose untimely death in January at the age of 30 left his family in dire financial straights. A lifelong skateboarding enthusiast and friend to skaters around the world, Harper has reunited with the Innocent Criminals for the first time since 2007 to re-record the song “Jah Work” from his 1997 album, “The Will to Live.” The song is available on iTunes April 30th, with all proceeds going to the Lewis Marnell family memorial fund.
